Chicken story

One day I was in the car with Nana, Mum, Clare and Iris. We were going to a place where we could buy some chickens. My stomach felt like it had butterflies in it because I was excited.

When we finally arrived we got out of the car to meet a man; I called him A M for short. We all walked over to the shed. It was at least the size of a classroom. When we walked over I spotted a bunny it was so, so, so cute. It had a golden orange coat. I patted it. It was medium sized and felt like a cloud stuffed with the the world softest silk. Then A M opened the box next to the bunny and in the box were three tiny baby bunnies; they were at least 10 centimetres long. I can guarantee that the other bunny was their mother. When we were in the shed I saw two more bunnies; they were smaller than the mother. I went over to the first one. It was as white as snow. I was able to pet it, it was almost as soft as the mother. Then I went over to the second bunny it was a light brown but I sadly wasn't able to pet it because it was too shy.

Then I realise two things: One; nana was looking at the tomatoes the whole time; which proves that she is a born gardener. Two; that we were there for chickens not bunnies(sadly). We were able to choose what size chickens we wanted. We were allowed to choose out of baby chickens, medium chickens or fully grown chickens. We went with medium sized chickens( but I really wanted baby chickens because they were so cute with their fluffy bodies.) We walked on brown mud sticking to our shoes to go to the chicken coop.

A M went into the muddy chicken coop to get two chickens. The first one he picked up was friendly. He put it down and said “too small”, because it was about 5 cm smaller than it was meant to be, we all let out a little ‘aww’. Then A M grabbed two others. When he carried them they look very awkward because one of the chicken’s feet was in the others face. We got the cat carrier and put the chickens inside.

The carrier was made of hard plastic and smelled like cat food from when my cat had been eating in it. I had a turn carrying the carrier. I never would have thought that two medium-sized chickens could weigh so much. Luckily Clare carry them to the car. When we were in the car, on the drive home, I kept on checking on the chickens through the hole at the top of the carrier. The chickens were making the carrier rattle like a snake.

When we finally got home from the place were we bought the chickens mum said that we had to wait for Dad to get home so he could help get everything ready for the chickens.

When he got home we were able to let the chickens out. Clare reached into the carrier and carefully took out one of the beautiful chickens. I asked if I could get the other chicken out and Clare said yes. I was going to all along. So when I reached into the carrier and my hands touch the chicken I wrapped my hands around it and took it out very carefully, so I wouldn’t hurt it . It was the most beautiful chicken I had ever seen. The only difference between my chicken and Clare’s was that my chicken was a darker red with more white spots on her neck, otherwise they were identical. But while we were enjoying the chickens I was called inside to do something for Nana.

After I had finished I quickly helping Nana with making dinner I ran outside and when I got to the chicken paddock I saw Clare’s chicken balancing on her head. Clare was wobbling so I thought that her chicken was heavy.

I got my chicken and put it down and I said ‘my chicken is so sweet and precious’. And then I had it; my new chickens name had to be precious. That night when I was eating dinner Clare was still thinking of a name for her chicken. Clare said that she wanted to name her chicken after a character in her book ‘Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children.”The name picking went on for about a day and then it came to her “Perigon’ It kind of suits her chicken because it is a name for an eagle and Perigon is brave Like an Eagle.

Sadly the other chickens are fiercely pecking Precious and Perigon 24/7 when they have done absolutely nothing wrong. Precious and Perigon are a lot more friendly now although they are still picking on my poor innocent feet. but they are still friendly. They absolutely hate wekas and always chase them when they come into the chicken coop. I can't can't wait until they start laying eggs so then I can eat them {yum}. They are still running around or should I say trying to fly around. I can't wait to see what they are going to do next maybe they might lay some eggs with baby chicken with inside. I can't wait.

Bye Amber

  1. This is such a rich, descriptive piece of writing. I love the sentence about your 'poor innocent feet'. How are they these days? Leaving your feet alone by now I hope!
